A Flemish artist who drew inspiration from the everyday lives of the peasantry: weddings, feasts, banquets. Biblical events and proverbs were also a theme of his paintings. Pieter Bruegel was the first artist who painted landscapes for themselves, and not just as backgrounds for biblical allegories. His style is characterized by a unique simplicity, which was dominant in Italian art during the artist’s life.
