Prominent 20th century painter, a precursor of mestizaje plástico. Lam created his own art style, a unique synthesis of contemporary forms of expression, elements of African and Latin American cultures, and other cultures he had contact with. He also added elements of the Afro-Cuban spirit to his art. During a four-month stay on Haiti, he participated in Voodoo rituals, and his paintings underwent a radical transformation.
