Painted in 1888 in Arles, Provence. One of Van Gogh’s most widely recognized paintings. Sunflowers are part of a series of seven paintings with sunflowers as the main motif. Yellow is the dominating hue. A characteristic feature of the painting is the contrast between the cold, bluish background and the vivid, radiant flowers. Vincent Van Gogh used a technique which involved layering paint.
